State of Art Orthotics

Illustration

We have all heard the song, “The foot bone is connected to the ankle bone and the ankle bone is connected to the leg bone”, etc.Your anatomic internal structural relationship, is most important in preventing foot and sports injuries and in increasing functional performance. Orthotics have been proven to positively affect your walking, standing alignment and even sports performance. Also, non-custom or custom-made orthotics can dramatically assist in healing and preventing recurrence of many foot and ankle problems.

Our Unique Testing and Recommending Medically Necessary Orthotics

Step 1: A computer evaluation and structural examination is completed. You literally stand, walk and even run on the computer platform. The computer then provides extremely detailed information regarding your function and alignment, which is reviewed with you.
Step 2: A short treatment and home exercise program is formulated and completed by you. A series of usually (3) biomechanical adhesive taping is completed to your feet, simulating a structural change to your feet and alignment according to the walking test assessment results and your specific medical condition.
Step 3: A follow-up computer assessment is completed usually on the fourth visit. Thenspecific shoe type/brand is recommended and if needed, a non-custom or custom orthotic is prescribed.
Orthotics have been found helpful in treating and preventing conditions such as heel pain and arch pain, shin splints, bunion deformity and pain, contracted digits, too much or too little turn-out, over-use injuries and orthopedic problems such as hip and back as related to faulty alignment. An orthotic must be individually made for your particular functional needs. There are many types of orthotics of various thicknesses and of different supportive and shock-absorbing materials that can be made for most type of shoes and for individual sports. Once again, Dr. Elliot Diamond will not only document your feet function by using our state of art computerized gait system, but will also test you for a select orthotic by simulating the orthotic correction through a series biomechanical taping to your feet. A home exercise regime to complement the overall treatment program for strength and range of motion.

Benefits of Orthotics

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS OF ORTHOTICS FOR ALL TYPES OF CONDITIONS

1. “A questionnaire was sent to 275 people that had been wearing custom orthotics for more than one year by the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine.
“Overall, the majority of respondents indicated that they were satisfied with their devices, obtaining significant (60 to 100%) relief of symptoms. Very few patients indicated total dissatisfaction. The data strongly suggest that custom-molded foot orthotics are an effective and viable treatment modality associated with a high level of patient satisfaction.” Walters, J: JAPA, 2004.

2. 62.5% of the participants in the study documented that their foot and body alignment condition completely resolved by using orthotics. “Orthotics reduced or delayed the need for surgery in general for hallux valgus (bunions) and hammer toe specifically. JAPA, Vol 83, 1993

3. “The use of foot orthoses in patients with plantar fasciitis appears to be associated with reduced pain and increased function. “ Un of VA, Sports Medicine

4. “Orthotic shoe inserts were most effective in the treatment of symptoms arising from biomechanical abnormalities, such as excessive pronation or leg length discrepancy. Along with other conservative measures, orthotic shoe inserts may allow the athlete to continue participation in running and avoid other treatment modalities that are more costly and time consuming, and therefore less acceptable to them.” Conditions included in the study were excessive pronation (being flat-footed), arch pain, leg length discrepancy, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, and knee disorders. Gross ML: Am. J. Sports Medicine, 1991

5. “The potential of foot orthotics for reducing pain and injuries is convincing.”
Human Performance Laboratory, Un. of Calgary

6. “Customized semi-rigid foot orthotics have moderate to large beneficial effects in treating and preventing plantar fasiitis (arch and heel pain) and posterior tibial stress fractures (the tibia is the inner larger of the two bones in the leg), and small to moderate effects in treating patellofemoral pain syndrome (knee pain).” Hume, P: Sports Medicine, 2008

7. Orthotics has been proven to be effective in reducing running injuries. If orthotics can reduce running injuries, then imagine the positive effects of orthotics during standing for long periods of time. There are significant forces placed through your knees, legs, ankles and feet with running and standing, the shock absorbing capacity of an orthotic is very beneficial. Sports Medicine, 1985

8. While wearing custom foot orthotic, subjects exhibited significantly enhanced the way their foot hit the ground and had a positive effect on their knee alignment. Department of Exercise Science, Un. of Mass

9. “People with early stages of tibialis posterior tendonopathy (pain below the inner ankle and foot, with the foot appearing to collapse in) benefited from a program of orthoses wear and stretching.” Kulig K: Physical Therapy, 2009

10. “Recent research in patients with acute and chronic ankle instability has revealed positive effects of foot orthoses on postural control.” The implications are that foot orthotics can be a positive effect on balance and overall posture. Richie, D JAPA, 2007
